I attended a 4-day continuing education seminar last weekend. That's why this newsletter is a bit late: I knew I'd have new things to share with you! This was a class on a specific system of acupuncture, called Mei Zen, or "beautiful person." We spent two days on the abdominal protocol, which is used for weight loss and fertility issues, and two days on cosmetic treatments for the face and neck.
My personal feeling about the protocols is that they used too many needles. After doing a regular treatment with body points, you add 30+ needles to the abdomen or face. I was taught - and my experience in the clinic continues to bear this out - that too many needles can be draining for the patient. This is particularly true if the person is a "deficient" case rather than an "excess" case. I also find that too many needles dilute the power of each individual point. I'd rather use just a few, and have them each be as influential as possible.
Okay, so I'm not likely to follow the exact protocols with you folks (If you really want me to, call me and we can talk). I learned a lot, though, and I feel my weight loss and fertility treatments will be more powerful now. I was reminded to clear old emotional blocks using the extraordinary channels, and even picked up some practical tips for needling.
Winter Driving
Hopefully the snowy sleety commutes are over for the season, but just in case... When you scrape your car clean in the morning, don't forget to uncover your headlights, taillights, and blinkers! It's hard enough to get around without knowing what the guy ahead of you is up to. Relax and leave a little extra stopping distance. When the snow stops, treat your car to a bath: The crusted-on salt will age both the paint and the bare metal undercarriage.
Point of the Month: GB-8
This point is found on the side of the head, about an inch above the center of the ears. Classically, it's used to treat tinnitus, migraine, vertigo, and vomiting. It's good for all kinds of dizziness.
To perform acupressure on GB-8, press gently but firmly with a fingertip for 10-20 seconds, or until you feel a shift in the point. You can also rub your knuckles back and forth across the "vertigo zone," highlighted here in red. Don't forget to use your positive, healing intentions when doing acupressure.
Thanks for reading! Next month, the theory of auricular (ear) acupuncture...
